Repairing Leaks In Aluminum Boats

When you own an aluminum boat you need to make sure that you know how to properly maintain and repair it. This will help you to use it for years and to save money from having someone else repair it for you. One common problem that people can have with any type of boat are leaks.

What To Do

You must first know exactly where the leak is and what might have caused it. The best way to do this is to dry out the inside of the boat and then place it in water. Make sure that you have several people helping you who can be on the look out for the leak on each side and area of the boat. When you have spotted the leak use a waterproof marker to mark the spot.

When you are fixing the leak it is easier and better to fix it n the outside of the hull. When it is on the inside the water pressure could push the patch you install off of the boat. However, to make it even more secure you can place the patch on both the inside and outside of the hull. When the leak is on the seam and hidden underneath the keel on the outside of the boat you will have to fix it on the inside.

There are many different materials that you are able to use when repairing leaks in aluminum boats. However, fiberglass is not one of them. This is because it is not able to flex properly with the aluminum material used for the hull. You are able to use aluminum brazing rods and a propane torch.

Some people are not comfortable using a torch. When this is the case you can just stick to using 3M 5200 sealant. The is a very common item that is used like caulking along the aluminum and the rivet. Make sure to clean the area before you apply the sealant. Using this will help to create patch for the leak that could be able to last for months or even years.
